MAYK is partnering with Ubumuntu Arts Festival, Rwanda and Theatre Factory in Uganda to create a newly commissioned live performance taking place simultaneously between Bristol (UK), Kampala (Uganda) and Kigali (Rwanda) in summer 2017. The project is funded by British Council East Africa’s New Arts New Audiences programme.
We are inviting proposals from a Bristol-based artist (aged 18–35) who works primarily in live performance. Working remotely with selected artists in Kigali and Kampala, you will collaborate to create a new live performance that explores the lived experience of young people in these very different cities. The commissioned work will use digital technology to link performance spaces and audiences.
We are looking for artists who are interested in the potential of digital technology in live performance, and in thematically exploring what it means to be a young person’ in Bristol today -and what effect digital technology has on that experience, or of sharing that experience. The project will include the involvement of young people in Bristol in the research and/or making of the work.
The selected artist will work with MAYK, our East African partners and artists in Rwanda and Uganda to explore how we might make something collaboratively for each of these very different contexts.
Alongside a £3000 commission we have secured funding for additional presentation and production costs, including a Dramaturg, Designer and other supportive roles. The project will be produced by MAYK.
To apply, please send an expression of interest (no longer than one side of A4) outlining how you would respond to this brief and a couple of links/examples of previous work firstname.lastname@example.org
